弘(hong)治十三年(nian)(nian)(1500)嘗為唐寅(yin)作《荷池(chi)消夏(xia)圖(tu)(tu)》圖(tu)(tu)錄于《藝林月(yue)刊》八十四期(qi)。傳世作品有(you)《招(zhao)仙圖(tu)(tu)》卷(juan)、弘(hong)治十四年(nian)(nian)(1501)作《秋林高士圖(tu)(tu)》軸(zhou)(有(you)文徵明(ming)楷(kai)書題跋)現藏故宮博(bo)(bo)物院;《漁樂圖(tu)(tu)》軸(zhou)藏臺北故宮博(bo)(bo)物院;弘(hong)治十七年(nian)(nian)(1504)作《織女圖(tu)(tu)》軸(zhou)藏上(shang)海博(bo)(bo)物館。
其生平按(an)(an)《吳(wu)越所見書畫(hua)錄》載:“夢晉(jin)與唐(tang)(tang)六如(ru)、祝希哲同時友(you)善,畫(hua)更高于六如(ru),死亦(yi)更早。”言(yan)張(zhang)靈(ling)死在唐(tang)(tang)寅(1470—1523)之前(qian)(qian)。徐(xu)禎卿《新倩籍》中有記張(zhang)靈(ling)詩文(略),極盡悲(bei)悼哀憫之情。按(an)(an)徐(xu)禎卿卒(zu)于1511年,時唐(tang)(tang)寅四(si)十(shi)(shi)二歲,而(er)張(zhang)靈(ling)必卒(zu)于徐(xu)之前(qian)(qian),由(you)此推(tui)知張(zhang)靈(ling)生于成化,約(yue)卒(zu)于正德初,年四(si)十(shi)(shi)左右。

余少時,閱唐解元《六(liu)(liu)如集(ji)》有(you)云:“六(liu)(liu)如嘗與(yu)祝(zhu)枝(zhi)山、張夢(meng)晉,大雪中效乞兒唱《蓮花(hua)》,得錢沽酒,痛(tong)飲野(ye)寺中。曰(yue):‘此(ci)樂(le),惜(xi)不(bu)令太白見之。’”心竊疑焉(yan),然不(bu)知夢(meng)晉為(wei)何許人也。頃(qing)閱稗乘中,有(you)一編(bian)曰(yue)《十美圖(tu)》,乃詳載(zai)張夢(meng)晉、崔素瓊(qiong)事。不(bu)覺驚喜叫跳,已(yi)而(er)潸然雨泣。此(ci)真(zhen)古今來才子佳人之軼事也,不(bu)可(ke)以不(bu)傳,遂為(wei)之傳。
張夢(meng)晉,名(ming)靈(ling)(ling),蓋(gai)正德時吳縣(xian)人(ren)也。生而姿(zi)容俊(jun)爽(shuang),才調無雙(shuang),工詩(shi)善畫,性風(feng)流豪放(fang),不(bu)(bu)(bu)可一(yi)世。家故赤貧,而靈(ling)(ling)獨蚤(zao)慧。當舞(wu)勺(shao)時,父命靈(ling)(ling)出應童(tong)子試(shi)(shi),輒以(yi)冠軍補弟子員(yuan)。靈(ling)(ling)心顧不(bu)(bu)(bu)樂,以(yi)為才人(ren)何苦為章縫束縛,遂(sui)絕(jue)意(yi)不(bu)(bu)(bu)欲(yu)復應試(shi)(shi)。日縱酒高吟(yin),不(bu)(bu)(bu)肯(ken)妄(wang)交(jiao)人(ren),人(ren)亦不(bu)(bu)(bu)敢輕交(jiao)與。惟與唐解元六(liu)(liu)如(ru)作忘年友。靈(ling)(ling)既(ji)氏,不(bu)(bu)(bu)娶。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)試(shi)(shi)叩之。靈(ling)(ling)笑曰(yue):“君(jun)豈(qi)有中意(yi)人(ren)足當吾(wu)(wu)偶(ou)者(zhe)耶(ye)?”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)曰(yue):“無之。但自(zi)古才子宜配(pei)佳人(ren),吾(wu)(wu)聊以(yi)此探(tan)君(jun)耳(er)(er)。”靈(ling)(ling)曰(yue):“固然(ran),今(jin)豈(qi)有其人(ren)哉?求之數千年中,可當才子佳人(ren)者(zhe),惟李太白與崔鶯鶯耳(er)(er)。吾(wu)(wu)唯不(bu)(bu)(bu)才,然(ran)自(zi)謫仙而外,似(si)不(bu)(bu)(bu)敢多讓。若(ruo)雙(shuang)文(wen)(wen),惜(xi)下嫁鄭恒,正未(wei)知果識(shi)張君(jun)瑞否?”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)曰(yue):“謹受(shou)教。吾(wu)(wu)自(zi)今(jin)請為君(jun)訪之,期(qi)得(de)雙(shuang)文(wen)(wen)以(yi)報命,可乎?”遂(sui)大笑別去。
一(yi)日,靈(ling)(ling)(ling)獨坐(zuo)讀(du)《劉(liu)(liu)伶傳(chuan)》,命童子進酒(jiu)(jiu)(jiu),屢讀(du)屢叫(jiao)絕(jue),輒拍案浮一(yi)大(da)白。久之,童子跪(gui)進曰(yue):“酒(jiu)(jiu)(jiu)罄(qing)矣。今日唐(tang)解(jie)元與祝(zhu)京兆宴(yan)集虎丘(qiu),公何不(bu)(bu)(bu)挾此(ci)編(bian)一(yi)往索醉耶(ye)?”靈(ling)(ling)(ling)大(da)喜,即(ji)行(xing)。然不(bu)(bu)(bu)欲為(wei)不(bu)(bu)(bu)速客,乃屏棄衣(yi)冠(guan),科跣雙髻,衣(yi)鶉結(jie),左持《劉(liu)(liu)伶傳(chuan)》,右持木杖,謳吟道情(qing)詞,行(xing)乞而(er)(er)前(qian)。抵虎丘(qiu),見(jian)貴游蟻聚,綺席喧闐(tian)。靈(ling)(ling)(ling)每過一(yi)處,輒執書(shu)(shu)向客曰(yue):“劉(liu)(liu)伶告(gao)飲!”客見(jian)其美丈夫,不(bu)(bu)(bu)類丐者(zhe),競以(yi)酒(jiu)(jiu)(jiu)饌(zhuan)貽之。有數賈人,方酌(zhuo)酒(jiu)(jiu)(jiu)賦詩(shi),靈(ling)(ling)(ling)至前(qian),請屬和。賈人笑之。其詩(shi)中有蒼官、青士、撲握、伊尼四事,因指以(yi)問靈(ling)(ling)(ling)。靈(ling)(ling)(ling)曰(yue):“松竹(zhu)兔鹿,誰(shui)不(bu)(bu)(bu)知(zhi)耶(ye)?”賈人始駭。令(ling)康(kang)詩(shi),靈(ling)(ling)(ling)即(ji)立揮百絕(jue)而(er)(er)去。遙(yao)見(jian)六如(ru)及(ji)祝(zhu)京兆枝山(shan)數輩(bei),共集可中亭。亦(yi)趨(qu)前(qian)執書(shu)(shu)告(gao)飲。六如(ru)早已知(zhi)為(wei)靈(ling)(ling)(ling),見(jian)其佯(yang)狂游戲,戒座客佯(yang)為(wei)不(bu)(bu)(bu)識者(zhe),以(yi)觀之。語靈(ling)(ling)(ling)曰(yue):“爾(er)丐子持書(shu)(shu)行(xing)乞,想能(neng)賦詩(shi)。試(shi)題悟石軒一(yi)絕(jue)句(ju),如(ru)佳,即(ji)賜爾(er)卮酒(jiu)(jiu)(jiu);否則,當叩爾(er)脛。”靈(ling)(ling)(ling)曰(yue):“易(yi)耳。”童子遂進毫楮。靈(ling)(ling)(ling)即(ji)書(shu)(shu)云:
勝跡天成(cheng)說虎丘,可中亭畔足酣游。
吟詩豈(qi)讓生(sheng)公法,頑石如(ru)何不點頭。
遂并毫楮(chu)擲地曰:“佳哉!擲地金聲也(ye)。”六(liu)如覽之(zhi),大笑。因呼(hu)與共飲。時(shi),觀者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)如堵,莫不(bu)(bu)相顧(gu)驚怪。靈既醉,即(ji)拂衣(yi)起,仍執書向悟石(shi)軒氏揖曰:“劉伶謝(xie)飲!”遂不(bu)(bu)別(bie)座(zuo)客徑去(qu)。六(liu)如謂枝山(shan)曰:“今日我輩此(ci)(ci)舉,不(bu)(bu)減晉人風流,宜(yi)寫一(yi)(yi)(yi)幀,為《張(zhang)(zhang)靈行(xing)乞圖(tu)》,吾(wu)任繪事,而公(gong)題跋之(zhi),亦千秋佳話也(ye)。”即(ji)舐筆伸紙,俄頃圖(tu)成。技山(shan)題數(shu)(shu)語其后。座(zuo)客爭傳玩嘆賞。忽一(yi)(yi)(yi)翁(weng)(weng)縞衣(yi)素冠,前(qian)揖曰:“二公(gong)即(ji)唐(tang)解(jie)元(yuan)、祝京兆(zhao)耶?仆企慕有(you)年,何幸識韓!”六(liu)如遜謝(xie),徐(xu)叩之(zhi),則南昌明(ming)經崔(cui)文(wen)博以海(hai)虞廣文(wen)告歸者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)也(ye)。翁(weng)(weng)得(de)圖(tu)諦視,不(bu)(bu)忍(ren)釋手。因訊適行(xing)乞者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)為誰。六(liu)如曰:“敝(bi)里(li)才(cai)于張(zhang)(zhang)靈也(ye)。”翁(weng)(weng)曰:“誠然,此(ci)(ci)固非真才(cai)子不(bu)(bu)能。”即(ji)向六(liu)如乞此(ci)(ci)圖(tu)歸。將返(fan)舟(zhou)(zhou),見(jian)(jian)舟(zhou)(zhou)已移(yi)泊他所(suo),呼(hu)之(zhi)始(shi)至。蓋翁(weng)(weng)有(you)女素瓊者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe),名(ming)瑩,才(cai)貌(mao)俱絕世。以新(xin)喪母,隨翁(weng)(weng)扶櫬(chen)歸。先艤(yi)舟(zhou)(zhou)岸側(ce)時(shi),聞人聲喧沸,乍啟檻窺(kui)之(zhi)。則見(jian)(jian)一(yi)(yi)(yi)丐者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe),狀貌(mao)殊不(bu)(bu)俗(su)。丐者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)亦熟(shu)視檻中,忽登舟(zhou)(zhou)長跪,自陳(chen)張(zhang)(zhang)靈求見(jian)(jian),屢發遣不(bu)(bu)去(qu)。良久,有(you)一(yi)(yi)(yi)童子入舟(zhou)(zhou),強挽之(zhi),始(shi)去(qu)。故(gu)瑩命移(yi)舟(zhou)(zhou)避之(zhi)。崔(cui)翁(weng)(weng)乃出(chu)圖(tu)示瑩,且(qie)備(bei)述其故(gu),瑩始(shi)知行(xing)乞者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)為張(zhang)(zhang)靈。嘆曰:“此(ci)(ci)乃真風流才(cai)子也(ye)!”取圖(tu)藏笥中。翁(weng)(weng)擬以明(ming)日往謁唐(tang)、祝二君,因訪靈。忽抱疴(ke)數(shu)(shu)日不(bu)(bu)起,為榜(bang)人所(suo)促,遽返(fan)豫章。
靈(ling)既于舟次見瑩(ying),以(yi)(yi)為絕(jue)代佳人(ren)(ren)(ren),也難再(zai)得。遂(sui)日(ri)走虎(hu)(hu)丘(qiu)偵(zhen)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),久之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)查然(ran)。屬(shu)(shu)靳(jin)人(ren)(ren)(ren)方志(zhi)來(lai)校士(shi)。志(zhi)既深(shen)惡古文詞,而又聞(wen)靈(ling)跅弛不羈(ji),竟褫(chi)其諸生(sheng)(sheng)。靈(ling)聞(wen)乃大(da)喜曰(yue)(yue):“吾(wu)正苦章縫(feng)束縛,今幸免矣!顧一(yi)(yi)褫(chi),何慮再(zai)褫(chi);且彼能褫(chi)吾(wu)諸生(sheng)(sheng)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)名,亦能褫(chi)吾(wu)才子之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)名乎?”遂(sui)往過(guo)六如(ru)(ru)(ru)家,見車騎填門,胥(xu)尉(wei)盈座。則江右(you)寧藩宸濠(hao)遣使(shi)來(lai)迎者也。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)擬赴其招。靈(ling)曰(yue)(yue):“甚善(shan)(shan)(shan)!吾(wu)正有厚望于君。吾(wu)曩者虎(hu)(hu)莊所(suo)遇之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)佳人(ren)(ren)(ren),即(ji)(ji)豫(yu)(yu)章人(ren)(ren)(ren)也。乞君為我(wo)(wo)多方訪之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),冀得當(dang)以(yi)(yi)報我(wo)(wo),此開天辟地第一(yi)(yi)吃緊事也。幸無忽(hu)忘。”六如(ru)(ru)(ru)曰(yue)(yue):“諾。”即(ji)(ji)偕藩使(shi)過(guo)豫(yu)(yu)章。時(shi),宸濠(hao)久蓄異謀,其招致六如(ru)(ru)(ru),一(yi)(yi)博(bo)好賢虛譽;一(yi)(yi)慕六如(ru)(ru)(ru)詩畫(hua)兼扶,欲倩其作《十(shi)美圖(tu)(tu)》,獻(xian)(xian)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)九(jiu)(jiu)重(zhong)。其時(shi)宮中已覓得九(jiu)(jiu)人(ren)(ren)(ren),尚虛其一(yi)(yi)。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)請(qing)先寫之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。遂(sui)為寫九(jiu)(jiu)美,而各(ge)綴七絕(jue)一(yi)(yi)章于后。九(jiu)(jiu)美者:廣陵湯之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)靄字雨君,善(shan)(shan)(shan)畫(hua);姑蘇(su)木(mu)桂(gui)文舟,善(shan)(shan)(shan)琴;嘉(jia)禾朱嘉(jia)淑文孺,善(shan)(shan)(shan)書;金陵錢(qian)(qian)韶鳳生(sheng)(sheng),善(shan)(shan)(shan)歌(ge);江陵熊御小馮,善(shan)(shan)(shan)舞;荊溪杜(du)若芳洲,善(shan)(shan)(shan)箏;洛(luo)陽花尊朱芳,善(shan)(shan)(shan)等;錢(qian)(qian)唐柳春陽絮(xu)才,善(shan)(shan)(shan)瑟;公安薛幼端端清,善(shan)(shan)(shan)簫(xiao)也。圖(tu)(tu)詠(yong)既成,進(jin)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)濠(hao),濠(hao)大(da)悅。乃盛設特(te)宴六如(ru)(ru)(ru),而別一(yi)(yi)殿僚季(ji)(ji)生(sheng)(sheng)副(fu)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。季(ji)(ji)生(sheng)(sheng)者,憸人(ren)(ren)(ren)也。酒次,請(qing)觀九(jiu)(jiu)美圖(tu)(tu)。因進(jin)曰(yue)(yue):“十(shi)美欠一(yi)(yi),殊屬(shu)(shu)缺(que)陷。某(mou)愿舉(ju)一(yi)(yi)人(ren)(ren)(ren)以(yi)(yi)充(chong)其數,詰(jie)朝(chao)請(qing)持圖(tu)(tu)來(lai)獻(xian)(xian)。”比持圖(tu)(tu)以(yi)(yi)獻(xian)(xian),即(ji)(ji)崔瑩(ying)也。濠(hao)見之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)曰(yue)(yue):“此真國色矣!”即(ji)(ji)屬(shu)(shu)季(ji)(ji)生(sheng)(sheng)往說之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。
先是,崔翁(weng)(weng)(weng)家居時,瑩(ying)(ying)才名(ming)噪甚(shen),求姻者踵至,翁(weng)(weng)(weng)度非瑩(ying)(ying)匹,悉拒不(bu)(bu)(bu)納。既從虎(hu)丘得張(zhang)靈(ling),遂(sui)雅屬意(yi)(yi)靈(ling),不(bu)(bu)(bu)意(yi)(yi)疾作遽歸。思(si)夏往吳中,托六如主其事。適季(ji)生旋里(li)喪耦,熟聞瑩(ying)(ying)名(ming),預遣女(nv)畫(hua)師潛繪(hui)其容,而求姻于翁(weng)(weng)(weng)。翁(weng)(weng)(weng)謀諸瑩(ying)(ying),瑩(ying)(ying)固不(bu)(bu)(bu)許。于是,季(ji)生銜(xian)之(zhi),因假手于濠,以(yi)泄私忿。時濠威殊張(zhang)甚(shen),翁(weng)(weng)(weng)再三力辭,不(bu)(bu)(bu)得。瑩(ying)(ying)窘激(ji)欲自(zi)裁,翁(weng)(weng)(weng)復多方護(hu)之(zhi)。瑩(ying)(ying)嘆曰:“命也,已矣(yi)!夫復何(he)言!”乃取(qu)笥(si)中《行乞(qi)圖》自(zi)題詩其上(shang)云:
才(cai)子(zi)風(feng)流第一(yi)人,愿隨行乞樂清(qing)貧。入宮祇(zhi)恐無紅葉(xie),臨別題詩當會真(zhen)。
舉以授翁(weng)曰:“愿(yuan)持此(ci)復張郎,俾知世間有情癡女子(zi)如(ru)(ru)(ru)崔(cui)素瓊者(zhe),亦不虛其為一(yi)生(sheng)才子(zi)也!”遂慟哭入宮(gong)。濠(hao)得(de)之(zhi)喜甚,復倩六(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)圖詠(yong),以為十美(mei)之(zhi)冠。而(er)六(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)先已(yi)取(qu)季生(sheng)所(suo)獻(xian)者(zhe),摹得(de)一(yi)紙藏之(zhi)。瑩既知六(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)在(zai)宮(gong)中,乘間密致一(yi)緘(jian),以述己意。六(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)得(de)緘(jian),乃(nai)大驚惋,始知此(ci)女即(ji)靈(ling)所(suo)托訪者(zhe)。“今事既不諧,復為繪圖進獻(xian),豈非(fei)千古(gu)罪人!將來何(he)面目見良友(you)!”因急(ji)詣崔(cui)翁(weng),索得(de)《行乞圖》返宮(gong),將相機(ji)維(wei)挽。不意十美(mei)已(yi)即(ji)日就道(dao),六(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)悔恨無已(yi)。又見濠(hao)逆跡漸著,急(ji)欲辭歸,苦為濠(hao)羈(ji)縻。乃(nai)發(fa)狂,號呼顛擲,溲穢狼藉。濠(hao)久之(zhi)不能堪,仍遣使送歸,杜門月余乃(nai)起。過張靈(ling)時,靈(ling)已(yi)頹(tui)然臥(wo)病矣。
蓋(gai)靈(ling)自(zi)別(bie)六(liu)如(ru)(ru)后(hou)(hou),邑邑亡憀,日(ri)(ri)縱酒狂呼(hu)(hu),或(huo)歌或(huo)哭。一(yi)日(ri)(ri)中(zhong)(zhong)秋,獨走虎丘千(qian)人(ren)石(shi)畔,見優伶(ling)演(yan)(yan)劇,靈(ling)佇視良(liang)久,忽大叫曰:“爾等所(suo)演(yan)(yan)不(bu)(bu)(bu)佳,待吾(wu)演(yan)(yan)王(wang)子(zi)晉吹笙跨(kua)鶴(he)!”遂控一(yi)童子(zi)于(yu)地(di)而跨(kua)其(qi)背,攫伶(ling)人(ren)笙吹之(zhi)(zhi),命童子(zi)作(zuo)鶴(he)飛;捶(chui)之(zhi)(zhi)不(bu)(bu)(bu)起,童子(zi)怒,掀靈(ling)于(yu)地(di)。靈(ling)起曰:“鶴(he)不(bu)(bu)(bu)肯飛,吾(wu)今既不(bu)(bu)(bu)得(de)為(wei)天仙,惟當作(zuo)水(shui)中(zhong)(zhong)仙耳!”遂躍入劍池中(zhong)(zhong)。眾急救之(zhi)(zhi)出,則面額(e)俱損,且傷股不(bu)(bu)(bu)能行,人(ren)送(song)其(qi)歸家(jia)(jia)。自(zi)此委頓枕席(xi),日(ri)(ri)日(ri)(ri)在醉夢中(zhong)(zhong)。至(zhi)是,忽聞六(liu)如(ru)(ru)至(zhi),乃從榻間躍起,急叩豫章佳人(ren)狀。六(liu)如(ru)(ru)出所(suo)摹素(su)瓊圖示之(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)一(yi)見,詫為(wei)天人(ren),急捧置(zhi)案問,頂禮(li)跪拜(bai),自(zi)陳“才子(zi)張靈(ling)拜(bai)謁”云云。已(yi)(yi)(yi),聞瑩(ying)已(yi)(yi)(yi)入宮(gong),乃撫(fu)圖痛哭。六(liu)如(ru)(ru)復出瑩(ying)所(suo)題(ti)《行乞圖》示之(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)讀罷,益痛哭。大呼(hu)(hu):“佳人(ren)崔素(su)瓊!”隨(sui)蹄地(di)嘔血不(bu)(bu)(bu)止(zhi)。家(jia)(jia)人(ren)擁至(zhi)榻間,病愈(yu)甚(shen)。三日(ri)(ri)后(hou)(hou),邀六(liu)如(ru)(ru)與訣曰:“已(yi)(yi)(yi)矣!唐君!吾(wu)今真死矣!死后(hou)(hou),乞以此圖殉(xun)葬(zang)。”索(suo)筆書片(pian)紙云:“張靈(ling),字夢晉,風(feng)流放誕人(ren)也,以情死。”遂擲筆而逝。六(liu)如(ru)(ru)哭之(zhi)(zhi)慟(tong),乃葬(zang)靈(ling)于(yu)玄(xuan)墓山之(zhi)(zhi)麓(lu),而以圖殉(xun)焉。檢(jian)其(qi)生平文章,先已(yi)(yi)(yi)自(zi)焚,惟收其(qi)詩草及《行乞圖》以歸。
時(shi),瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)已(yi)(yi)率十美(mei)抵(di)(di)都(dou)。因(yin)駕(jia)幸榆林,久之未得(de)進(jin)御。而(er)(er)宸濠已(yi)(yi)舉兵反,為(wei)王守仁所敗,旋即就擒。駕(jia)還(huan)時(shi),以十美(mei)為(wei)逆(ni)藩(fan)所獻(xian),悉遣歸母家,聽其(qi)適人。于是瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)仍得(de)返(fan)豫章。值崔(cui)(cui)翁(weng)已(yi)(yi)捐館舍(she),有老仆崔(cui)(cui)恩殯之。瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)哀(ai)痛至甚。然煢孑無(wu)依,葬(zang)父已(yi)(yi)畢(bi),遂(sui)挈(qie)裝徑抵(di)(di)吳門,命崔(cui)(cui)恩邀六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)相見于舟(zhou)(zhou)次。瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)首訊張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)近狀,六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)愴然收涕曰:“辱姊鍾(zhong)情(qing)遠顧,奈此君(jun)福薄,今已(yi)(yi)為(wei)情(qing)鬼矣!”瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)聞之,嗚咽失聲。詢知(zhi)靈(ling)(ling)葬(zang)于玄墓(mu)(mu),約明(ming)日(ri)同往祭之。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)明(ming)日(ri)果(guo)攜靈(ling)(ling)詩草及《行(xing)藝圖》至,與瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)各橈舟(zhou)(zhou)抵(di)(di)靈(ling)(ling)墓(mu)(mu)所,瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)衣輒(zhe)酹(lei),伏地拜哭甚哀(ai)。已(yi)(yi)乃懸《行(xing)乞(qi)圖》于墓(mu)(mu)前,陳設祭儀,坐石臺上,徐取(qu)(qu)靈(ling)(ling)詩草讀(du)(du)之。每讀(du)(du)一(yi)(yi)章,輒(zhe)酹(lei)酒一(yi)(yi)卮,大呼:“張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)才子!”一(yi)(yi)呼一(yi)(yi)哭,哭罷又讀(du)(du),往復不休。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)不忍聞,掩淚(lei)歸舟(zhou)(zhou)。而(er)(er)崔(cui)(cui)恩佇立已(yi)(yi)久,勸慰無(wu)從,亦起去(qu),徘徊丘垅間。及返(fan),則(ze)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)已(yi)(yi)自(zi)縊于臺畔(pan)。恩大驚,走告六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)趁視,見瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)已(yi)(yi)死。嘆息跪(gui)拜曰:“大難!大難!我唐(tang)寅今日(ri)得(de)見奇(qi)人奇(qi)事(shi)矣!”遂(sui)具棺衾,將易服斂之。而(er)(er)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)通體衫(shan)襦皆(jie)細綴(zhui)嚴密無(wu)少隙,知(zhi)其(qi)矢死已(yi)(yi)久。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)因(yin)取(qu)(qu)詩草及《行(xing)乞(qi)圖》,并置棺中為(wei)殉,啟靈(ling)(ling)擴與瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)同穴。而(er)(er)植碑題其(qi)上云(yun):“明(ming)才子張(zhang)夢晉、佳人崔(cui)(cui)素瓊合(he)葬(zang)之墓(mu)(mu)”。時(shi),傾城士(shi)人哄傳(chuan)感(gan)嘆,無(wu)貴賤賢愚,爭來(lai)吊誄,絡繹喧豗,云(yun)蒸雨集,哀(ai)聲動(dong)地,殆莫知(zhi)其(qi)由也。六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)既合(he)葬(zang)靈(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)(ying)(ying),檢(jian)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)所遺囊中裝,為(wei)置墓(mu)(mu)田(tian),營丙舍(she),命崔(cui)(cui)恩居之,以供(gong)春秋奠掃之役。嗚呼!才子佳人,一(yi)(yi)旦至此。庶乎靈(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)之事(shi)畢(bi),而(er)(er)六如(ru)(ru)(ru)(ru)之事(shi)亦畢(bi)矣。
而六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)于明(ming)年(nian)仲春,躬詣墓所拜(bai)奠。夜宿丙舍(she)旁,輾轉不(bu)寐(mei),啟窗縱(zong)目,則萬(wan)樹梅花(hua),一(yi)天明(ming)月(yue)(yue),不(bu)知身在人(ren)(ren)世。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)悵然嘆曰(yue):“夢晉一(yi)生狂放、淪落不(bu)偶,今得(de)(de)與崔(cui)美(mei)人(ren)(ren)合(he)葬(zang)此間(jian),消受香光,亦差可不(bu)負矣!但將(jiang)未知誰葬(zang)我(wo)(wo)唐(tang)寅耳!”不(bu)覺欷歔泣下。忽(hu)遙聞(wen)有人(ren)(ren)朗吟云:“花(hua)滿山(shan)中高士(shi)(shi)臥(wo),月(yue)(yue)明(ming)林下美(mei)人(ren)(ren)來(lai)(lai)。”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)急(ji)起入(ru)林迎揖,則張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)也(ye)(ye)。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)訝曰(yue):“君死(si)(si)(si)已久,安(an)得(de)(de)來(lai)(lai)此吟高季迪詩(shi)?”靈(ling)(ling)笑曰(yue):“君以為我(wo)(wo)真(zhen)死(si)(si)(si)耶?死(si)(si)(si)者(zhe)形,不(bu)死(si)(si)(si)者(zhe)性,吾既為一(yi)世才(cai)子,死(si)(si)(si)后豈若他人(ren)(ren)泯(min)沒耶?今乘此花(hua)滿山(shan)中,高士(shi)(shi)偃臥(wo)時來(lai)(lai)造訪耳。”復舉手前(qian)指(zhi)曰(yue):“此非‘月(yue)(yue)明(ming)林下美(mei)人(ren)(ren)來(lai)(lai)’乎?”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)回顧,有美(mei)人(ren)(ren)姍姍來(lai)(lai)前(qian),則崔(cui)瑩(ying)也(ye)(ye)。于是,兩人(ren)(ren)攜手整(zheng)襟,向(xiang)六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)拜(bai)謝合(he)葬(zang)之(zhi)德。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)方扶掖之(zhi),忽(hu)又有人(ren)(ren)大呼(hu)曰(yue):“我(wo)(wo)高季迪梅花(hua)詩(shi),乃(nai)千古絕唱(chang),何物張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling),妄(wang)稱才(cai)子,改‘雪’為‘花(hua)’,定須飽我(wo)(wo)老拳(quan)!”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)轉瞬之(zhi)間(jian),靈(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)俱失所在。其(qi)人(ren)(ren)直前(qian)呼(hu)曰(yue):“當捶此改詩(shi)之(zhi)賊才(cai)子!”捽(zu)六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)欲(yu)毆之(zhi),六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)驚(jing)寤。則半窗明(ming)月(yue)(yue),闃其(qi)無人(ren)(ren)。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)憮然,始(shi)信真(zhen)才(cai)子與真(zhen)佳(jia)人(ren)(ren),蓋死(si)(si)(si)而不(bu)死(si)(si)(si)也(ye)(ye)。因匡坐(zuo)梅窗下,作《張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)崔(cui)瑩(ying)合(he)傳》以紀其(qi)事。然今日《六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)(ru)集》中,固未嘗見此傳也(ye)(ye)。余又安(an)得(de)(de)而不(bu)亟(ji)補之(zhi)哉。
畸史(shi)氏曰:嗟乎(hu)!蓋(gai)吾閱(yue)《十美(mei)圖編》,而(er)(er)后(hou)知(zhi)世間真(zhen)有(you)(you)(you)才(cai)(cai)(cai)子(zi)佳人(ren)(ren)也。從來稗官家言,大抵真(zhen)贗(yan)參半(ban)。若夢晉之(zhi)(zhi)名,既章(zhang)章(zhang)于《六(liu)如集(ji)》中,但素瓊(qiong)之(zhi)(zhi)事,無從考證。雖然,有(you)(you)(you)其事何(he)必(bi)無其人(ren)(ren),且安知(zhi)非(fei)作者(zhe)有(you)(you)(you)為而(er)(er)發乎(hu)?獨怪夢晉之(zhi)(zhi)才(cai)(cai)(cai),目空千(qian)古,而(er)(er)其尚論才(cai)(cai)(cai)子(zi)佳人(ren)(ren),則專以太白與鶯(ying)鶯(ying)當(dang)之(zhi)(zhi)。夫太白誠(cheng)天上(shang)仙才(cai)(cai)(cai),不(bu)可有(you)(you)(you)二。若千(qian)古佳人(ren)(ren),自當(dang)以文君為第一(yi)。而(er)(er)夢晉顧舍彼取此(ci)(ci),厥后(hou),果遇素瓊(qiong),毋乃(nai)思崔(cui)得崔(cui),適符其讖耶(ye)?至于張以情(qing)死,崔(cui)以情(qing)殉,初非(fei)有(you)(you)(you)一(yi)詞半(ban)縷之(zhi)(zhi)成約(yue),而(er)(er)慷慨從容,等泰山(shan)于鴻(hong)毛,徒以才(cai)(cai)(cai)色相憐之(zhi)(zhi)故。推此(ci)(ci)志也,凜凜生(sheng)氣,日月爭光(guang),又(you)遠出琴心(xin)犢(du)鼻之(zhi)(zhi)上(shang)矣。而(er)(er)或者(zhe)猶追(zhui)恨于夢晉之(zhi)(zhi)早死。以為夢晉若不(bu)死,則素瓊(qiong)遣歸之(zhi)(zhi)日,正崔(cui)張好(hao)合之(zhi)(zhi)年,后(hou)此(ci)(ci)或白頭唱和,蘭(lan)玉盈階,未可知(zhi)也。噫!此(ci)(ci)固庸(yong)庸(yong)蚩蚩者(zhe)之(zhi)(zhi)厚福也,何(he)有(you)(you)(you)于才(cai)(cai)(cai)子(zi)佳人(ren)(ren)哉(zai)!
張靈(ling)本窶人(ren)子(zi),力(li)作(zuo)(zuo)自(zi)給,而(er)靈(ling)生乃有爽氣,嗜酒醉則作(zuo)(zuo)狂曰(yue)(yue)(yue):“日(ri)休,小豎子(zi)耳,尚能稱醉士,我(wo)獨不(bu)能醉耶!”所與(yu)(yu)游者(zhe)(zhe),吳趨、唐寅最善,寅嘗擬游武丘(qiu),召靈(ling)與(yu)(yu)俱往,促之,尚臥,寅抵(di)寢所呼(hu)曰(yue)(yue)(yue):“日(ri)高舂矣(yi),睡(shui)何(he)為(wei)(wei)?”靈(ling)覺(jue),怒曰(yue)(yue)(yue):“今(jin)者(zhe)(zhe)無酒,雅懷(huai)殊不(bu)啟。方入(ru)醉鄉,又為(wei)(wei)相攪。”寅曰(yue)(yue)(yue):“所以(yi)來,固欲邀子(zi)。”靈(ling)喜(xi),加(jia)衣起,遂與(yu)(yu)寅上舟扣舷痛飲,作(zuo)(zuo)《野人(ren)歌》。會數賈飲于可(ke)中(zhong)亭,且(qie)詠詩(shi),因更衣為(wei)(wei)丐者(zhe)(zhe)上,賈與(yu)(yu)食(shi)啖之,靈(ling)請續(xu)和。時賈所為(wei)(wei)詩(shi)有“蒼(cang)官”、“青士”、“撲握”,“伊(yi)尼(ni)”諸詞,因以(yi)問靈(ling),靈(ling)曰(yue)(yue)(yue):“蒼(cang)官,松也(ye);青士,竹也(ye);撲握,免也(ye);伊(yi)尼(ni),鹿也(ye)。”賈始駭(hai)令(ling)賡,靈(ling)即(ji)揮毫不(bu)已,凡百絕(jue)。抵(di)舟,命(ming)童子(zi)易(yi)維蘿陰下令(ling)跡絕(jue)。賈使(shi)人(ren)察(cha)之,不(bu)見(jian)也(ye)。皆以(yi)為(wei)(wei)神仙。賈去(qu),復上亭,朱衣金目,作(zuo)(zuo)胡人(ren)舞形(xing)狀(zhuang),殊絕(jue)。
祝允(yun)明(ming)嘗偕陸濟民、張夢晉、韓壽椿登(deng)虎(hu)丘浮屠。登(deng)至絕頂,但見八荒洞(dong)然,萬籟齊(qi)發,飲酒樂甚。壽椿出紙(zhi)筆(bi)賦詩以紀其(qi)游,允(yun)明(ming)詩先成,云:“草木衣裳下,煙霞掌握中(zhong)。偶然飛咳唾,珠玉滿天風(feng)(feng)。”濟民云:“極目飛鴻小,致(zhi)身云路(lu)中(zhong)。詩人少知(zhi)(zhi)己,發付(fu)與東風(feng)(feng)。”夢晉云:“慮遣塵寰外,天歸眼界(jie)中(zhong)。新詩三百(bai)首(shou),句句答松(song)風(feng)(feng)。”壽椿云:“詩寄千峰抄,春(chun)橫一鏡中(zhong)。攜壺兼荷(he)鐘,不(bu)減(jian)晉人風(feng)(feng)。”詩成閣筆(bi),天風(feng)(feng)颯然飄其(qi)詩草,盤旋直上太虛,如神物掀舞。將(jiang)擲(zhi)地,又為蒼鷹(ying)所舉,竟不(bu)知(zhi)(zhi)其(qi)所止。遂名為“飛詩會。”
初,張靈(ling)與(yu)唐寅(yin)俱為(wei)郡學生,博古相尚(shang)。適(shi)鄞人(ren)方志來督學,惡(e)古文詞,察知寅(yin),欲中(zhong)傷之(zhi)(zhi),靈(ling)挹郁不(bu)自遣。寅(yin)曰(yue):“子未為(wei)所(suo)知,何愁之(zhi)(zhi)甚(shen)?”靈(ling)曰(yue):“獨不(bu)聞(wen)(wen)龍王欲斬(zhan)有(you)尾族(zu),蝦蟆亦哭(ku)乎?”后靈(ling)果為(wei)所(suo)斥罷,或(huo)謂之(zhi)(zhi)曰(yue):“以(yi)子之(zhi)(zhi)才,顧不(bu)得激致(zhi)青云,乃重遭顯(xian)棄,豈無雉經之(zhi)(zhi)用,而何以(yi)立于(yu)(yu)世?”靈(ling)曰(yue):“昔(xi)謝豹化為(wei)蟲,行地中(zhong),以(yi)足覆面(mian)作忍(ren)恥狀。吏靈(ling)用子言,亦當如是矣(yi)。縱不(bu)爾,亦安得更銜(xian)鑿落耶(ye)!”靈(ling)臨終前三日(ri)作詩(shi)云:“一枚蟬(chan)蛻榻當中(zhong),命也難辭付大空。垂(chui)死尚(shang)思玄(xuan)墓麓,滿山寒雪一林(lin)松。”后一日(ri)又作詩(shi)云:“彷佛飛魂(hun)亂哭(ku)聲,多情(qing)于(yu)(yu)此(ci)轉多情(qing)。欲將(jiang)眾淚澆心火,何日(ri)張家(jia)再托生?”聞(wen)(wen)者莫不(bu)悲之(zhi)(zhi)。
