六(liu)世班(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)于乾(qian)隆三年在后藏向(xiang)扎喜(xi)策轉世,三歲(sui)時坐床。班(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)是(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)額爾德(de)尼的簡稱(cheng),班(ban)(ban)(ban)是(shi)梵語(yu),意(yi)為“精通五明的學(xue)者(zhe)”,禪(chan)是(shi)藏語(yu)“大”的意(yi)思。額爾德(de)尼是(shi)滿語(yu),意(yi)為“寶(bao)”。六(liu)世班(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)名貝丹益西(公(gong)(gong)元(yuan)1738-1780),意(yi)譯吉祥智,清乾(qian)隆四十年(公(gong)(gong)元(yuan)1780年)奉命進京(jing)(jing)給清高(gao)宗祝壽,先住承德(de)避(bi)暑山(shan)莊,后隨駕到北京(jing)(jing),清室(shi)賜給玉(yu)冊(ce)玉(yu)印。同年在北京(jing)(jing)西黃(huang)寺圓寂。
六世(shi)班(ban)禪額爾德尼(ni)羅桑華丹益希,于藏歷(li)第十二繞迥(jiong)之(zhi)土(tu)馬年(nian)(nian)(1738年(nian)(nian),清乾隆三年(nian)(nian))生在襄地扎(zha)西則(今(jin)后藏南木林宗扎(zha)西則)地方。父唐拉,咒師出(chu)身;母尼(ni)達昂茂(mao),系(xi)貴族宗室之(zhi)女。
1740年(nian),經(jing)過札什(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)寺喇嘛尋(xun)訪考(kao)察,在拉(la)(la)薩請(qing)護法神(shen)降神(shen),七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)派(pai)代表,會(hui)同噶廈政府官員,共同確認羅(luo)桑華丹(dan)益希是前世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)禪轉世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)靈童。七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)正式(shi)通(tong)知札什(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)寺,并通(tong)知駐藏大臣紀山(shan),請(qing)他(ta)轉奏清高宗皇(huang)帝,不(bu)久使得到乾隆皇(huang)帝的(de)(de)恩準(zhun)。七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)給(gei)(gei)六世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)禪取法名(ming)羅(luo)桑華丹(dan)益希。金雞年(nian)(1741年(nian))六月四日,將靈童迎到札什(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)寺日光殿舉行坐床(chuang)典禮(li),乾隆帝特派(pai)專(zhuan)員與(yu)七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)的(de)(de)代表一起由頗羅(luo)鼐(nai)陪(pei)同到札什(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)寺祝賀(he)坐床(chuang)典禮(li)。土蛇(she)年(nian)(1749年(nian))九(jiu)月,六世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)禪到拉(la)(la)薩拜會(hui)七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)。七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)說:“前世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)禪是我(wo)的(de)(de)上師,給(gei)(gei)我(wo)傳授(shou)了許多經(jing)典教授(shou)。現在要把我(wo)學(xue)到的(de)(de)經(jing)典傳授(shou)給(gei)(gei)你”。七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)給(gei)(gei)他(ta)授(shou)了沙(sha)彌(mi)戒,從(cong)此便(bian)建(jian)立了師徒關(guan)系。六世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)禪住在布(bu)達(da)拉(la)(la)宮,每天由七(qi)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)賴(lai)(lai)(lai)給(gei)(gei)他(ta)傳授(shou)經(jing)論(lun)。
六世班禪的(de)著作有《持樂國愿望》、《自傳》上下冊、《道情歌集(ji)匯(hui)編》、《菩(pu)提道次(ci)第面授法(fa)·利他甘露(lu)瓶(ping)》、《顯密集(ji)要(yao)點問答匯(hui)編》、《十(shi)六羅漢(han)繞佛記》、《喇巴強巴傳》、《圣(sheng)·洛桑巴傳奇·不可(ke)思議》、書札(zha)、儀軌、修行等方面的(de)典籍共98種之多。
火牛年(nian)(1757年(nian))二(er)月(yue),誦經祈禱達賴喇嘛(ma)早日轉(zhuan)世(shi)。當乾(qian)隆帝接到七世(shi)達賴圓寂的奏報后,擔心(xin)西藏局勢不穩,即派(pai)國師章嘉·若白多杰入(ru)藏辦理七世(shi)達賴的后事,并主(zhu)持認(ren)定轉(zhuan)世(shi)靈(ling)童。是年(nian)六月(yue),由經師羅桑群(qun)佩在(zai)札什倫(lun)布寺為六世(shi)班禪授比(bi)丘戒。
土(tu)虎年(1758)四(si)月,章(zhang)嘉(jia)(jia)·若白多(duo)(duo)杰赴后(hou)藏(zang)(zang)到(dao)札什(shen)(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)(bu)寺看望六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan),商議(yi)西藏(zang)(zang)政(zheng)(zheng)教(jiao)事務(wu)。1759年二月,章(zhang)嘉(jia)(jia)國師(shi)和(he)噶廈(sha)政(zheng)(zheng)府請六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)到(dao)拉薩(sa),為(wei)章(zhang)嘉(jia)(jia)國師(shi)等6000多(duo)(duo)名僧眾(zhong)傳授(shou)(shou)時輪大(da)灌頂,并(bing)和(he)章(zhang)嘉(jia)(jia)國師(shi)一(yi)(yi)起(qi)為(wei)七世(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)(lai)的(de)(de)(de)靈塔(ta)開光。1760年,六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)派(pai)人在(zai)后(hou)藏(zang)(zang)托(tuo)布(bu)(bu)嘉(jia)(jia)地方訪到(dao)八世(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)(lai)靈童后(hou),經乾(qian)隆(long)帝(di)恩(en)準(zhun),接(jie)到(dao)札什(shen)(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)(bu)寺,由六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)為(wei)他(ta)(ta)剪(jian)發(fa)起(qi)法名。1762年,在(zai)六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)的(de)(de)(de)主持(chi)下,為(wei)八世(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)(lai)在(zai)布(bu)(bu)達(da)(da)拉宮(gong)舉行坐床典禮。1765年,六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)又(you)到(dao)拉薩(sa)為(wei)八世(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)(lai)授(shou)(shou)沙彌戒,并(bing)在(zai)布(bu)(bu)達(da)(da)拉宮(gong)為(wei)八世(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)(lai)講經兩(liang)個多(duo)(duo)月。1766年,乾(qian)隆(long)帝(di)遣使到(dao)札什(shen)(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)(bu)寺冊(ce)封六(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan),頒給金(jin)冊(ce)金(jin)印(yin)(yin)。金(jin)冊(ce)大(da)意是(shi)贊(zan)譽班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)是(shi)札什(shen)(shen)(shen)倫(lun)布(bu)(bu)寺的(de)(de)(de)一(yi)(yi)名德高望重的(de)(de)(de)高憎,且是(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)(lai)的(de)(de)(de)上師(shi),精通佛法,要向(xiang)僧俗公眾(zhong)宣(xuan)傳,嚴守正(zheng)確的(de)(de)(de)戒律,要整飭(chi)發(fa)展衛藏(zang)(zang)的(de)(de)(de)佛教(jiao)事業,努力使衛藏(zang)(zang)的(de)(de)(de)每(mei)個庶(shu)民知曉德行禮節。班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)大(da)師(shi)寫了一(yi)(yi)封奏折向(xiang)皇上謝恩(en)。1769年,他(ta)(ta)31歲時,乾(qian)隆(long)帝(di)又(you)賜給了一(yi)(yi)顆(ke)用230兩(liang)黃金(jin)鑄成(cheng)的(de)(de)(de)有(you)藏(zang)(zang)、滿(man)、蒙三種文字的(de)(de)(de)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)額爾德尼金(jin)印(yin)(yin)。
1774年(nian)(nian),英(ying)(ying)國(guo)(guo)東印(yin)(yin)(yin)公司與不(bu)丹發生(sheng)戰爭,不(bu)丹國(guo)(guo)王請六(liu)世(shi)班(ban)禪寫信調(diao)解。英(ying)(ying)國(guo)(guo)駐印(yin)(yin)(yin)總(zong)督哈斯汀(ting)士遂利用(yong)這一(yi)(yi)機會,派遣東印(yin)(yin)(yin)公司職(zhi)員英(ying)(ying)國(guo)(guo)人波格爾擅(shan)自(zi)闖到札什倫布寺見(jian)六(liu)世(shi)班(ban)禪。六(liu)世(shi)班(ban)禪用(yong)印(yin)(yin)(yin)度語與他交(jiao)談,強調(diao)不(bu)丹是中國(guo)(guo)藩屬,而西藏(zang)(zang)屬中國(guo)(guo)領土,一(yi)(yi)切要(yao)聽從中國(guo)(guo)大(da)皇帝的圣旨辦事。對波格爾提(ti)出的英(ying)(ying)國(guo)(guo)與西藏(zang)(zang)建立(li)聯(lian)系、英(ying)(ying)方與西藏(zang)(zang)自(zi)由通(tong)商、請介紹到拉(la)(la)薩見(jian)駐藏(zang)(zang)大(da)臣并在(zai)拉(la)(la)薩設立(li)代表等要(yao)求,一(yi)(yi)律(lv)加以拒絕(jue),使(shi)波格爾的計(ji)劃未能得逞(cheng)。火(huo)雞年(nian)(nian)(1777年(nian)(nian))四月(yue),六(liu)世(shi)班(ban)禪應邀(yao)在(zai)拉(la)(la)薩大(da)昭(zhao)寺為八世(shi)達賴授比(bi)丘戒(jie)。在(zai)布達拉(la)(la)宮(gong)居住一(yi)(yi)年(nian)(nian),給達賴傳(chuan)經。
1778年(nian)(nian),乾隆(long)帝為(wei)慶賀自己的(de)(de)70大(da)壽(shou)(shou),邀請(qing)六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)進(jin)(jin)京(jing)(jing)(jing)。土(tu)豬年(nian)(nian)(1779年(nian)(nian))六(liu)(liu)(liu)月(yue)(yue),六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)率13名勒參巴從札(zha)什倫(lun)布(bu)寺(si)(si)(si)(si)啟(qi)程,經(jing)(jing)(jing)過羊八(ba)(ba)井時,八(ba)(ba)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)、駐(zhu)(zhu)藏(zang)大(da)臣(chen)、攝政和(he)全(quan)體噶倫(lun)前來隆(long)重(zhong)(zhong)迎(ying)送。進(jin)(jin)入青海后(hou),陜甘總(zong)督和(he)西(xi)寧辦事大(da)臣(chen)等率僧俗數萬(wan)人分批迎(ying)接。當年(nian)(nian)十(shi)(shi)月(yue)(yue)十(shi)(shi)五(wu)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)到次(ci)年(nian)(nian)三(san)月(yue)(yue)十(shi)(shi)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)一(yi)行(xing)駐(zhu)(zhu)錫塔爾寺(si)(si)(si)(si)過冬;從塔爾寺(si)(si)(si)(si)出發前班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)大(da)師(shi)(shi)讓二(er)(er)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)嘉木樣活佛(fo)為(wei)其(qi)隨從人員(yuan)種痘(dou),他自己卻(que)沒種。金(jin)(jin)(jin)鼠年(nian)(nian)(1780年(nian)(nian))七月(yue)(yue)二(er)(er)十(shi)(shi)一(yi)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)一(yi)行(xing)到達(da)(da)承德。六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)乘(cheng)(cheng)轎(jiao)到承德避暑山莊覲見清(qing)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)時,清(qing)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)特許(xu)乘(cheng)(cheng)轎(jiao)至殿(dian)前,見面時問道:“喇嘛身(shen)體好嗎?一(yi)路上(shang)辛苦了吧?”班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)答稱:“托皇(huang)(huang)上(shang)洪福,沿途無恙。”清(qing)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)又(you)說(shuo):“朕(zhen)今(jin)年(nian)(nian)已70歲,以如(ru)此高(gao)(gao)齡(ling),幸見喇嘛,甚慰朕(zhen)懷(huai)。從此中土(tu)佛(fo)法弘揚可期,四海人民得歌升平。”并(bing)將自己用的(de)(de)珍珠串、玉如(ru)意和(he)一(yi)條內庫(ku)哈(ha)達(da)(da)贈給六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)。次(ci)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),清(qing)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)親臨須(xu)(xu)彌福壽(shou)(shou)廟看(kan)望班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan),高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)說(shuo):“昔日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)五(wu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)達(da)(da)賴(lai)來朝,我祖特建(jian)黃(huang)寺(si)(si)(si)(si)以館之。朕(zhen)今(jin)特建(jian)熱(re)河札(zha)什倫(lun)布(bu)寺(si)(si)(si)(si),以備喇嘛駐(zhu)(zhu)錫。切欲(yu)對話,故學藏(zang)語(yu),但只能講普通(tong)用語(yu),圣經(jing)(jing)(jing)文(wen)奧典,仍(reng)須(xu)(xu)由章(zhang)(zhang)嘉呼圖克圖譯(yi)述。”皇(huang)(huang)上(shang)能用藏(zang)語(yu)交(jiao)談,班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)大(da)為(wei)驚訝,也深(shen)受感動。七月(yue)(yue)二(er)(er)十(shi)(shi)四日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)清(qing)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)在(zai)(zai)避暑山莊萬(wan)樹園(yuan)(yuan)宴(yan)請(qing)六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)。八(ba)(ba)月(yue)(yue)三(san)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)又(you)派內大(da)臣(chen)二(er)(er)人到須(xu)(xu)彌福壽(shou)(shou)廟給班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)頒賜玉冊玉印。八(ba)(ba)月(yue)(yue)七日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)和(he)章(zhang)(zhang)嘉國師(shi)(shi)率僧眾(zhong)至避暑山莊誦經(jing)(jing)(jing),為(wei)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)祝(zhu)壽(shou)(shou),班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)進(jin)(jin)獻(xian)(xian)重(zhong)(zhong)300兩(liang)的(de)(de)金(jin)(jin)(jin)佛(fo)像(xiang)、佛(fo)案和(he)菩薩畫像(xiang)81幅、全(quan)套《甘珠爾》、重(zhong)(zhong)30兩(liang)的(de)(de)金(jin)(jin)(jin)制護(hu)身(shen)盒(he)、琥(hu)珀串珠三(san)掛等物品(pin),作為(wei)壽(shou)(shou)禮。八(ba)(ba)月(yue)(yue)十(shi)(shi)三(san)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)又(you)到避暑山莊率僧眾(zhong)誦經(jing)(jing)(jing)祝(zhu)福乾隆(long)帝萬(wan)壽(shou)(shou)無疆,并(bing)參加祝(zhu)壽(shou)(shou)宴(yan)會等活動。八(ba)(ba)月(yue)(yue)二(er)(er)十(shi)(shi)五(wu)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)離熱(re)河經(jing)(jing)(jing)古北(bei)口(kou)至北(bei)京(jing)(jing)(jing),由皇(huang)(huang)六(liu)(liu)(liu)子和(he)章(zhang)(zhang)嘉國師(shi)(shi)陪同游覽圓明園(yuan)(yuan)、大(da)鐘寺(si)(si)(si)(si)、頤和(he)園(yuan)(yuan)、香山等地,為(wei)殿(dian)堂、園(yuan)(yuan)林(lin)、寺(si)(si)(si)(si)院開光加持(chi)。九(jiu)(jiu)月(yue)(yue)十(shi)(shi)八(ba)(ba)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),清(qing)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)謁陵后(hou)返(fan)京(jing)(jing)(jing),與六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)在(zai)(zai)香山昭廟會見,高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)又(you)向班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)獻(xian)(xian)金(jin)(jin)(jin)如(ru)意、羊脂五(wu)香爐、寶(bao)體等;班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)向高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)獻(xian)(xian)佛(fo)像(xiang)及袈裟等。九(jiu)(jiu)月(yue)(yue)二(er)(er)十(shi)(shi)五(wu)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)到西(xi)黃(huang)寺(si)(si)(si)(si)看(kan)望班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)。十(shi)(shi)月(yue)(yue)三(san)日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),在(zai)(zai)紫(zi)禁城(cheng)保(bao)和(he)殿(dian)宴(yan)請(qing)六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan),特許(xu)六(liu)(liu)(liu)世(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)乘(cheng)(cheng)轎(jiao)至層丹墀。十(shi)(shi)月(yue)(yue)二(er)(er)十(shi)(shi)七日(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri)(ri),班(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)(ban)禪(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)(chan)在(zai)(zai)雍和(he)宮為(wei)高(gao)(gao)宗(zong)(zong)(zong)傳授佛(fo)法。
金鼠年(nian)(1780年(nian),乾隆四十(shi)五年(nian))十(shi)一(yi)月二日下(xia)午,六(liu)世班禪(chan)(chan)在北京西(xi)黃寺(si)(si)因(yin)患天花治(zhi)療無效(xiao)而圓寂,享(xiang)年(nian)42歲(sui)。班禪(chan)(chan)遺體在西(xi)黃寺(si)(si)停放了6天,供各界人(ren)士(shi)和佛(fo)教(jiao)徒瞻仰。然后用防(fang)腐藥水浸洗,移(yi)置到由(you)高(gao)宗(zong)(zong)御賜(si)的用7000兩(liang)黃金制造的天降金塔里。次年(nian)二月,六(liu)世班禪(chan)(chan)的靈塔運(yun)往西(xi)藏(zang)札(zha)什倫(lun)布寺(si)(si),札(zha)什倫(lun)布寺(si)(si)僧眾造了一(yi)座大銀塔,將御賜(si)金塔供奉在內。高(gao)宗(zong)(zong)為了紀念六(liu)世班禪(chan)(chan),特(te)命在他生前(qian)住過(guo)的西(xi)黃寺(si)(si),建立了一(yi)座宏偉的"清凈化(hua)城塔"。寺(si)(si)內有清高(gao)宗(zong)(zong)御制的用漢(han)、滿、蒙、藏(zang)四種文(wen)(wen)字(zi)書寫的碑文(wen)(wen)。
