甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)出生于一個(ge)農民(min)家庭,南北戰(zhan)爭(zheng)使美(mei)國(guo)防止了(le)(le)(le)分裂,卻導致了(le)(le)(le)甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)家庭的(de)(de)貧窮。幼年的(de)(de)艱辛(xin),使甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)明白了(le)(le)(le)勤(qin)勉、儉樸、自(zi)省、奮斗的(de)(de)意義所在(zai)。1880年,當(dang)他(ta)(ta)在(zai)霍普(pu)金斯(si)大(da)學(xue)(xue)以優異成(cheng)(cheng)績(ji)畢業時,他(ta)(ta)明白,大(da)學(xue)(xue)的(de)(de)學(xue)(xue)習所得還遠遠不夠。于是(shi),他(ta)(ta)一邊(bian)在(zai)自(zi)己(ji)原來(lai)的(de)(de)母校麥克(ke)多(duo)納(na)預備學(xue)(xue)校任(ren)教,一邊(bian)在(zai)斯(si)蒂(di)文斯(si)理工學(xue)(xue)院(yuan)繼續學(xue)(xue)習,到1884年,他(ta)(ta)成(cheng)(cheng)為(wei)一名機械工程(cheng)師(shi)。在(zai)麥克(ke)多(duo)納(na)從事自(zi)然科(ke)學(xue)(xue)和機械技術教學(xue)(xue)的(de)(de)經歷(li),對他(ta)(ta)日后(hou)(hou)(hou)的(de)(de)職(zhi)業生涯有(you)著重(zhong)大(da)影響。1887年,甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)來(lai)到米德(de)維爾鋼鐵廠(chang)任(ren)助理工程(cheng)師(shi),在(zai)這里,他(ta)(ta)結識了(le)(le)(le)泰羅,并(bing)在(zai)后(hou)(hou)(hou)來(lai)和泰羅一起去了(le)(le)(le)西蒙德(de)公司和伯利恒(heng)公司。此后(hou)(hou)(hou),甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)同泰羅密切(qie)合(he)作,共同研究科(ke)學(xue)(xue)管理問題,直到離開伯利恒(heng)為(wei)止。1902年以后(hou)(hou)(hou),甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)離開了(le)(le)(le)泰羅,獨立開業當(dang)咨詢(xun)工程(cheng)師(shi),并(bing)先后(hou)(hou)(hou)在(zai)哥倫比亞、哈佛、耶魯等大(da)學(xue)(xue)任(ren)教。第一次世界大(da)戰(zhan)期(qi)間(jian),甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)放棄(qi)了(le)(le)(le)賺錢的(de)(de)企業咨詢(xun),為(wei)政府和軍(jun)隊(dui)充當(dang)顧問,對造船(chuan)廠(chang)、兵工廠(chang)的(de)(de)管理進行了(le)(le)(le)深入的(de)(de)研究。因為(wei)甘(gan)(gan)(gan)(gan)特(te)(te)(te)(te)在(zai)戰(zhan)爭(zheng)期(qi)間(jian)的(de)(de)貢獻,他(ta)(ta)獲得了(le)(le)(le)美(mei)國(guo)聯(lian)邦(bang)政府的(de)(de)服務(wu)優異獎章。

泰羅(luo)去世后,甘(gan)(gan)特(te)對(dui)(dui)科學管(guan)(guan)理(li)(li)有(you)著更多(duo)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)深入思(si)(si)考(kao)。1914-1915年(nian),他(ta)(ta)出(chu)任美國(guo)機(ji)械工(gong)程師(shi)協會(hui)副主席,此后,他(ta)(ta)從管(guan)(guan)理(li)(li)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)社(she)會(hui)性出(chu)發,對(dui)(dui)工(gong)業(ye)管(guan)(guan)理(li)(li)乃至社(she)會(hui)管(guan)(guan)理(li)(li)提出(chu)了(le)一(yi)(yi)(yi)些新的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)見解。在(zai)他(ta)(ta)眼里,蓬勃(bo)(bo)發展的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)工(gong)業(ye)社(she)會(hui)和(he)(he)雄心勃(bo)(bo)勃(bo)(bo)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)企業(ye)領(ling)袖(xiu)存在(zai)著巨大的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)隱(yin)患,專制(zhi)主義和(he)(he)唯(wei)利(li)是(shi)(shi)圖(tu)嚴重影(ying)響著工(gong)業(ye)社(she)會(hui)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)發展方向。他(ta)(ta)認為(wei),工(gong)業(ye)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)健康(kang)發展,必須在(zai)工(gong)業(ye)民主和(he)(he)精英治理(li)(li)之(zhi)間取得(de)平衡。在(zai)甘(gan)(gan)特(te)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)思(si)(si)想中,金融(rong)巨頭(tou)、勞(lao)工(gong)領(ling)袖(xiu)都不足以成(cheng)為(wei)社(she)會(hui)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)領(ling)頭(tou)人(ren),真正領(ling)導美國(guo)社(she)會(hui)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)應當(dang)(dang)是(shi)(shi)工(gong)程師(shi)。1916年(nian),他(ta)(ta)成(cheng)立了(le)一(yi)(yi)(yi)個名為(wei)“新機(ji)器”的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)組織,集中了(le)一(yi)(yi)(yi)批追(zhui)(zhui)求政(zheng)治權(quan)力(li)(li)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)工(gong)程師(shi)和(he)(he)改(gai)革者,“新機(ji)器”試圖(tu)影(ying)響當(dang)(dang)時的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)美國(guo)總統威爾遜,號召把治理(li)(li)國(guo)家的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)權(quan)力(li)(li)交給工(gong)程師(shi)。這時的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)甘(gan)(gan)特(te)認為(wei),商人(ren)追(zhui)(zhui)求的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)是(shi)(shi)利(li)潤(run),謀(mou)求的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)是(shi)(shi)壟斷,而(er)忘記了(le)對(dui)(dui)社(she)會(hui)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)服務(wu)(wu)。“我們(men)必須清除我們(men)經(jing)濟制(zhi)度(du)中一(yi)(yi)(yi)切形式的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)專制(zhi)做(zuo)法,并(bing)且提供(gong)能夠恢復服務(wu)(wu)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)民主原則,而(er)這種原則是(shi)(shi)民主文(wen)明取得(de)驚人(ren)發展的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)基礎。”“工(gong)程師(shi)是(shi)(shi)一(yi)(yi)(yi)個談論少而(er)了(le)解事實(shi)多(duo)和(he)(he)行(xing)動(dong)多(duo)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)人(ren),應該讓他(ta)(ta)擔任經(jing)濟領(ling)導職(zhi)務(wu)(wu),這是(shi)(shi)我們(men)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)經(jing)濟制(zhi)度(du)中最適合(he)于他(ta)(ta)們(men)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)地位。”在(zai)這方面,甘(gan)(gan)特(te)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)思(si)(si)考(kao)具有(you)一(yi)(yi)(yi)定(ding)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)超前(qian)性。
甘特(te)(te)(te)去世后,他的(de)思想價(jia)值日益顯現(xian)。1929年,美(mei)國(guo)(guo)機械工程師協會和美(mei)國(guo)(guo)管(guan)理(li)(li)(li)學會決定(ding)設立亨利(li)·甘特(te)(te)(te)金(jin)質獎章(zhang)(zhang),授(shou)予那(nei)些“在(zai)工業管(guan)理(li)(li)(li)方(fang)面對社會做出優(you)異成(cheng)績的(de)人”,并把第一枚金(jin)質獎章(zhang)(zhang)授(shou)予了已故的(de)甘特(te)(te)(te)本(ben)人,理(li)(li)(li)由是“由于他在(zai)工業管(guan)理(li)(li)(li)方(fang)面的(de)人道主義(yi)影響(xiang)以(yi)及(ji)甘特(te)(te)(te)圖的(de)發明(ming)”。可以(yi)說,在(zai)科學管(guan)理(li)(li)(li)的(de)旗幟(zhi)上(shang),甘特(te)(te)(te)付出的(de)心血使它放出了異樣(yang)的(de)光彩。
