六殿卞(bian)城(cheng)王(wang)所管轄(xia)的地方是“大叫(jiao)喚大地獄(yu)及枉死城(cheng)”,另設十(shi)六小(xiao)地獄(yu)。凡世人忤逆不孝、怨天尤地、對北(bei)溺便涕泣者,發入(ru)此獄(yu)。查所犯事件,亦(yi)要受(shou)到鐵錐打(da)、火燒舌之刑罰(fa)。再發小(xiao)獄(yu)受(shou)苦,滿日(ri)轉(zhuan)解第七(qi)殿,再查有無別惡(e)。

據晚唐至(zhi)五(wu)(wu)代(dai)時期(qi)道(dao)(dao)明(ming)和尚所撰《佛說十王(wang)經(jing)》記載:佛在鳩(jiu)尸那(nei)城阿維跋提河邊(bian)娑羅(luo)雙樹間,臨涅槃時,為諸菩薩(sa)、摩訶(he)薩(sa)、天(tian)(tian)龍(long)神王(wang)、四大(da)(da)(da)天(tian)(tian)王(wang)、閻(yan)(yan)羅(luo)天(tian)(tian)子、太山府君、司命(ming)(ming)司錄、五(wu)(wu)道(dao)(dao)大(da)(da)(da)神、地獄典官(guan)等授記說法。佛告大(da)(da)(da)眾(zhong)閻(yan)(yan)羅(luo)天(tian)(tian)子于未來世作(zuo)佛,多生習善為犯戒故(gu),退落琰摩天(tian)(tian)中,作(zuo)大(da)(da)(da)魔王(wang),管攝諸鬼,科斷(duan)閻(yan)(yan)浮提內十惡五(wu)(wu)逆一(yi)切罪人。勸眾(zhong)生造此經(jing)及諸尊像(xiang)以薦拔亡(wang)魂、七(qi)(qi)七(qi)(qi)修(xiu)齋(zhai)造像(xiang)以報(bao)父母(mu)恩,令(ling)得(de)升天(tian)(tian)。人死后(hou)從頭(tou)七(qi)(qi)、二七(qi)(qi)直至(zhi)七(qi)(qi)七(qi)(qi),百日、一(yi)年(nian)、三年(nian),亡(wang)魂將逐一(yi)經(jing)過十王(wang)殿(dian),亡(wang)人家屬須(xu)祈(qi)請十王(wang)作(zuo)齋(zhai)修(xiu)福,寫經(jing)造像(xiang),便可拔除亡(wang)魂罪業,使(shi)之“不生三惡涂(途(tu)),不入一(yi)切諸大(da)(da)(da)地獄”,而往生天(tian)(tian)道(dao)(dao)。過十王(wang)若(ruo)闕一(yi)齋(zhai),則滯在一(yi)王(wang),留連受苦一(yi)年(nian)。若(ruo)生人為己預修(xiu)七(qi)(qi)齋(zhai),于每月十五(wu)(wu)、三十日兩天(tian)(tian)持齋(zhai),供養(yang)三寶,祈(qi)設十王(wang),修(xiu)名納狀(zhuang),奏上(shang)六(liu)曹,如此則死后(hou)可配生快樂之處,不住中陰(yin)四十九日,不待男女追救命(ming)(ming)。(注釋:十王(wang)經(jing)是提到(dao)十殿(dian)閻(yan)(yan)王(wang)的(de)最早記錄來源,因(yin)資料不全,卞城王(wang)的(de)來源不明(ming),但(dan)其中國(guo)本土化的(de)特征很明(ming)顯)
據北宋(song)時期(qi)沙門(men)常謹所撰《地(di)(di)藏(zang)菩薩靈(ling)驗(yan)記》卷29中(zhong)云:“沙門(men)智佑是西印(yin)度人也,天福年中(zhong)(936~943)來自西(原文作“來至而(er)”),住清(qing)泰(tai)寺(si),所持像(xiang)經中(zhong),有地(di)(di)藏(zang)菩薩變(bian)相并(bing)本愿功德經梵夾,其(qi)像(xiang)相者(zhe),中(zhong)央圓輪中(zhong)畫菩薩像(xiang),冠帽持寶錫,左(zuo)右(you)有十王(wang)(wang)像(xiang)各五人,左(zuo)五者(zhe):一泰(tai)(秦)廣王(wang)(wang)、二初(chu)江王(wang)(wang)、三宗(宋(song))帝王(wang)(wang)、四(si)五官王(wang)(wang)、五閻羅大王(wang)(wang);右(you)五者(zhe):一變(bian)成王(wang)(wang)、二太(tai)山(shan)王(wang)(wang)、三平等王(wang)(wang)、四(si)都市王(wang)(wang)、五五道(dao)轉(zhuan)輪王(wang)(wang),一一各具司(si)命、司(si)錄、府(fu)君(jun)、典官等。
據(ju)明朝時期吳承(cheng)恩所撰《西(xi)游記》第五(wu)十(shi)八回二心攪亂大(da)乾(qian)坤一體難修真寂(ji)滅記載:“大(da)王(wang)(wang),背陰山上,有兩個齊天大(da)圣(sheng)打得(de)來(lai)也!”慌得(de)那第一殿(dian)(dian)秦廣王(wang)(wang)傳(chuan)報與二殿(dian)(dian)楚江王(wang)(wang)、三殿(dian)(dian)宋(song)帝王(wang)(wang)、四(si)殿(dian)(dian)卞城王(wang)(wang),五(wu)殿(dian)(dian)閻(yan)羅(luo)(luo)王(wang)(wang)、六殿(dian)(dian)平等(deng)王(wang)(wang)、七殿(dian)(dian)泰(tai)山王(wang)(wang)、八殿(dian)(dian)都(dou)市王(wang)(wang)、九殿(dian)(dian)仵(wǔ)官(guan)王(wang)(wang)、十(shi)殿(dian)(dian)轉(zhuan)輪(lun)王(wang)(wang)。一殿(dian)(dian)轉(zhuan)一殿(dian)(dian),霎(sha)時間(jian),十(shi)王(wang)(wang)會齊,又著人(ren)飛報與地藏王(wang)(wang)。盡在森羅(luo)(luo)殿(dian)(dian)上,點(dian)聚(ju)陰兵,等(deng)擒真假。(注釋:大(da)體意思是有真假兩個孫(sun)悟(wu)空因為無人(ren)能夠分辨誰真誰假,跑(pao)到(dao)陰曹(cao)地府請十(shi)殿(dian)(dian)閻(yan)王(wang)(wang)、判(pan)官(guan)和(he)地藏王(wang)(wang)菩薩來(lai)分辨)
